The Power of Prayer

This is another entry under the whatever-I-want-to-talk-about category.

Recently my wife and I were preparing to wrap presents for my oldest daughter's birthday the following day.  A week previously we had purchased a CD for her, and I recall bringing the CD into our home; however, I could not find the CD where I thought I had placed it.  Over the next few hours we had four people searching every possible location where her gift should be; but, we could find no trace of the gift.

Whenever my children loose something important to them, my wife and I encourage them to pray and ask God to help them find what is so important to them.  Shortly after our search began, I remember thinking, "I should offer a quick prayer," in order to help recover the CD; but, I quickly dismissed that as a "child's" thing to do.  After a few hours of an unfruitful search, and with bedtime drawing near, I was humbled enough to have the following conversation with my wife:

"So, you know that thing we counsel our kids to do when they've lost something?"

"To pray?" she responded with a smile.

"Yeah--let's say a prayer and maybe the CD will suddenly appear on our table or start glowing or something," I joked.  I offered the prayer and I don't remember all that I said, but I remember I asked for the faith of a little child that our prayer would be heard and that which was lost would be found.

Within minutes after finishing the prayer, my daughter returned home from an activity she had been attending with friends, so we didn't kick up the search right away.  After a few minutes of talking, I turned around and walked across the room, and suddenly, there it was--sitting in its bag in a basket on our desk--just feet away from where we had been searching all evening.

Now a skeptic might say, "That was just a coincidence that you found the CD shortly after offering the prayer," but I know that it was something more.  I have had too many experiences in my life to doubt the power of prayer, yet earlier that night, that was exactly what I had done.  I had assumed that God would not be concerned about such a small thing as a missplaced gift--why should I bother Him with that?  Yet if we don't go to God with the small things--will we have the faith necessary when we need help with the big things?
